Uber Launches Program to Let Drivers Train A.I. Models In Their Downtime
Uber offers US gig workers new AI training tasks via its driver app to boost earnings during downtime and compete with established AI data-labeling platforms.
- On Thursday, Uber announced a US pilot offering Digital Tasks in its driver app, allowing some US gig workers to complete microjobs to train AI models.
- Following tests in India and past experiments, Uber's AI Solutions Group is piloting new ways for drivers and couriers to earn during downtime as CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said, `Drivers have asked for more ways to earn, even when they're not on the road`.
- The tasks include taking photos, uploading audio clips and submitting documents, Uber will block AI-training tasks while driving, and drivers see pay before accepting since payments vary by complexity and time.
- Also on Thursday, Uber announced Women Rider Preferences will expand to Baltimore, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Seattle, Portland, Oregon, and Washington, D.C., with over 100 million trips using it, alongside a Delayed Ride Guarantee and enhanced tipping reminders via iPhone Live Activities.
- Longer term, Uber's strategy is to build the best platform for flexible work, helping independent contractors earn despite deactivations and threats from self-driving cars.
