Uber to Buy US Catering Platform ezCater for $2.3 Billion
The all-cash deal would add ezCater’s corporate ordering network to Uber Eats and Uber for Business, while helping restaurants win larger meals orders.
On Tuesday, Uber announced it will acquire US catering platform ezCater in an all-cash deal for $2.3 billion, expanding its food-delivery and workplace meals business.
Boston-Based ezCater connects businesses with more than 140,000 restaurants for corporate events and meetings, generating more than $2.5 billion in gross bookings over the past 12 months.
"Catering is a big business, and can be a huge revenue stream for restaurants," said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. ezCater chief executive Nihad Rahman added they are energized to bring their B2B expertise to Uber.
The purchase helps Uber compete with rival DoorDash, which launched workplace catering in April; DoorDash reported large team orders growing 30% faster than regular orders.
Subject to regulatory approval, the deal is expected to close in the coming months, following Uber's ongoing $15 billion purchase of Delivery Hero and other strategic expansions.
