Uber confirms major change to give passengers ‘peace of mind’
Uber says the tools will give riders and drivers extra peace of mind, with recordings encrypted on-device and deleted after two weeks if unused.
On Thursday, Uber introduced two new safety features: passenger audio recording and a verified badge system, designed to offer users "extra peace of mind."
Uber UK General Manager Andrew Brem said the company is "always investing in new ways to make journeys even safer," implementing these tools to address safety concerns for both riders and drivers.
Passengers may activate recording before or during trips with encrypted files stored locally; drivers receive notification if recording starts beforehand, allowing cancellation without penalty.
Starting next week, drivers will see verified badges for passengers who cross-checked personal details, which Kola Olalekan, an Uber driver and GMB union branch secretary, said provides "extra confidence."
Lucy Duckworth of the Survivors Trust said the features encourage a "safety-first culture," while transport official Lilian Greenwood welcomed steps ensuring everyone feels secure using private hire services.
