UAE Aims to Cut Dependency on Strait of Hormuz to 'Zero' with Major Ports Expansion Plan

The plan adds new harbors, pipelines and rail links as officials seek to protect exports of crude, LNG and petrochemicals, Bloomberg reported.

  • Foreign Trade Minister Thani Al Zeyoudi announced a 'highly ambitious plan' to reduce the UAE's reliance on the Strait of Hormuz to zero by expanding eastern ports at Dibba, Fujairah, and Khor Fakkan.
  • The war between the US and Iran prompted the initiative after the strait's closure restricted energy exports, though existing pipelines currently carry up to 1.5 million barrels per day.
  • Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company , announced new pipelines will double export capacity to above 3.5 million barrels daily, requiring 'significant investment' in rail and road networks.
  • Despite conflict-related disruptions, the UAE's gross domestic product grew 6.2 per cent in 2025, anchored by non-oil sector strength; Al Zeyoudi confirmed zero dependency remains a priority regardless of waterway status.
  • The expansion is expected to become operational next year, while Iraq is intensifying similar plans to accelerate exports through its Kurdistan-Turkey pipeline network.
