University of Texas Cuts Women's and Gender Studies Courses From Core Curriculum

The university said specialized courses belong in majors, not the core, as it plans a redesigned curriculum for fall 2027.

  • On Thursday, the Austin-American Statesman reported that The University will no longer count women's, gender and sexuality courses toward Core curriculum requirements, restricting them to electives.
  • After over 20 years without updates, President Jim Davis initiated a Core curriculum task force last year to review the educational plan and consolidate departments into a more rigorous structure.
  • The Social and Cultural Analysis department submitted 49 courses for Core approval, but the provost accepted only 16, excluding all gender and sexuality studies including 'Women and the Holocaust' and 'Slavery and its legacies'.
  • Lisa Moore, former chair of the women and gender studies department, called the decision 'blatant' viewpoint discrimination, arguing The University is 'singling out' her field; faculty have participated in protests over academic freedom.
  • Following the elimination of four undergraduate majors including African Diaspora Studies and Mexican American and Latino Studies, The University plans to fully implement the new Core curriculum by fall 2028.
