Two women die after BMW crashed into care home during police chase in Sunderland
SUNDERLAND, TYNE AND WEAR, JUL 9 – Two 21-year-olds face charges including manslaughter and robbery after a stolen BMW crashed into a Sunderland care home, killing two elderly residents and injuring eight others.
- On Wednesday evening, July 9, 2025, a stolen blue BMW was chased by police and crashed into Highcliffe Care Home in Witherwack, Sunderland.
- The car involved in the crash had been reported stolen in Fenham, Newcastle, approximately 20 minutes before the collision, which led to a police chase.
- Two elderly female residents, aged in their 80s and 90s, died from injuries, eight other residents were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and all residents were evacuated.
- Chief Superintendent Mark Hall described the situation as very distressing and expressed sympathy for all those impacted and their families.
- Two 21-year-old men remain in police custody, held in connection with motor vehicle theft, manslaughter, and, for one of them, dangerous driving, as authorities continue their investigation and provide support to those affected.
