Marathon Record Broken: Two Runners Break 2-Hour Mark
Sebastian Sawe won in 1:59:30, while Yomif Kejelcha finished 11 seconds behind and Tigst Assefa set a women’s-only record.
- On Sunday, Kenya's Sabastian Sawe won the London Marathon in 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds, with Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha finishing second in 1:59:41, becoming the first two men to officially break the 2-hour barrier in a 42km marathon.
- Unlike Eliud Kipchoge's 2019 sub-two-hour run on a 6-mile Vienna circuit with rotating pacemakers, this achievement occurred during an official marathon, comparable to Sir Roger Bannister's four-minute mile breakthrough 72 years ago.
- Sawe pulled clear of Kejelcha after about 30km and accelerated in the final two kilometres, covering the second half in 59:01, while third-place Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda finished in 2:00:28, breaking the previous record by seven seconds.
- Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa won the women's race in 2:15:41, the fastest time for a women's-only marathon, while the milestone sparked worldwide celebration of both achievements.
- The runners wore Adidas Adios Pro Evo 3 'supershoes' weighing less than 100g that improve running economy by about 4 per cent, supported by Sawe's reported training of up to 240km weekly and carbohydrate intake averaging 115g per hour.
