Two Japanese Boxers on Same Card Die From Brain Injuries
TOKYO, JAPAN, AUG 10 – The Japan Boxing Commission cut Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation title bouts from 12 to 10 rounds after two fighters aged 28 died from brain injuries at the same event.
- Two Japanese boxers, Shigetoshi Kotari and Hiromasa Urakawa, died after suffering brain injuries in separate fights on the same card in Tokyo on August 2.
- Kotari, 28, died on August 8 after undergoing surgery for a subdural hematoma, or bleeding inside the skull, sustained in a 12-round draw against Yamato Hata.
- Urakawa, also 28, died on August 9 following a knockout loss to Yoji Saito, with the World Boxing Organization extending condolences to their families and the Japanese boxing community.
