Two House Democrats Break With Party on Vote to Advance Russia Sanctions Bill
Two moderate House Democrats, Jared Golden and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, voted with Republicans to pass a procedural rule advancing a Russia sanctions bill, defying House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries' leadership and risking the bill's failure.
Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez justified their votes by citing overwhelming bipartisan support in the Senate and their desire to support Ukraine by cutting off Russian oil funding the war.
Jeffries condemned their votes as a significant breach of trust and requested the Committee on Caucus Rules to respond to their actions.
The two Democrats' break from party ranks angered fellow Democrats and raised concerns about Jeffries' ability to maintain control over his caucus if Democrats regain the House.
