Two Dead, 11 Rescued After Ship Catches Fire and Sinks in Black Sea, Romania Says
On Monday, the cargo ship Royad Mammadov caught fire following a suspected drone strike near the Pesc platform in the Black Sea.
The vessel, which departed Izmail, Ukraine, for Ravenna, Italy, was struck around 9 nautical miles from the offshore oil and gas platform.
Romania's Naval Authority confirmed that two people have died and 13 sailors are missing, while 11 crew members were brought to safety.
The Maritime Coordination Center requested the Romanian Agency for Lifesaving at Sea to intervene, with multiple rescue ships dispatched to the sinking vessel.
Rescue operations continue outside Romania's territorial waters as authorities investigate the incident, which occurred while the ship was transporting grain through the Black Sea.
Two deaths, one burning ship and the next serious incident: The attacks on civilian merchant ships in the Black Sea are increasing. Particularly explosive is the case of a recently sunk cargo ship.
Ukrainian leaders condemned Russia, accusing it of attacking a corn-carrying ship in the Black Sea, resulting in its sinking and two deaths. Russia, however, claimed to have attacked two ships but did not confirm if it was the same one.
