Two arrested in Mississippi triple homicide that left toddler dead
Police say the killings were intentional and targeted, and officers recovered three firearms after a pursuit led to the arrests.
Jackson Police Department officers arrested Cornelius Carter, 28, and Jordan Carter, 26, on Monday in connection with the June 27 triple homicide of Kiana Weathersby, her 2-year-old son Kamari Gibbons, and her sister Erica Weathersby.
Describing the killings as a "targeted attack," Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney emphasized the violence intentionally included the child and was not a random act, though authorities declined to discuss specific motives.
Following a traffic stop near Highway 18 and Maddox Road, officers apprehended the suspects after a pursuit and recovered three firearms, including a 9 mm assault rifle, from the vehicle's backseat.
Both suspects face capital murder charges, with Cornelius Carter additionally charged as a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Jackson Mayor John Horhn commended police efforts and urged community support for the grieving family.
As Jackson faces a rise in gun-related violence, investigators continue processing evidence in this case, which marks the 41st, 42nd, and 43rd killings in the city during 2026 as of June 29.
