Turkey rejects ‘occupation’ language as Cyprus takes EU council presidency - Turkish Minute
Turkey’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Öncü Keçeli rejected descriptions of “occupation” and “invasion” used in speeches about Cyprus at an event on January 7 marking the Republic of Cyprus taking over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Türkiye reacted to the fact that many member and candidate countries described Türkiye as an occupying force on the island during an event held to mark the Republic of Cyprus's assumption of the EU Presidency.
On 1 January Cyprus assumed the presidency of the Council of the European Union, which will hold office during the first half of 2026. Its objectives will focus on Community autonomy, strengthening the defence and security of the bloc, as well as strengthening regional cooperation.
