Turkish Authorities Continue Detaining Opposition Politicians in 'Corruption Probe'
Turkish police detained Mersin Mayor Vahap Seçer and 58 other suspects in a corruption investigation, according to the state-run Anadolu Agency.
Authorities also detained Yenişehir Mayor Abdullah Özyiğit and Mezitli Mayor Ahmet Serkan Tuncer, all members of the opposition Republican People’s Party.
Investigators alleged public losses exceeding TL 330 million in Mersin, TL 1.1 billion in Mezitli, and TL 105 million in Yenişehir through disputed tenders and purchases.
The opposition rejects the corruption accusations as politically motivated, while the government says the judiciary is independent.
Several mayors have been detained again in raids on opposition politicians in Turkey, including Vahap Seçer, the mayor of the southern city of Mersin, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.
