Turkey says EU comments on its rights record, judiciary are ‘prejudiced, unfair’
Turkey called the EU report biased and unfair, rejecting criticism of rights, courts and Cyprus policy as double standards.
- On Wednesday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry rejected the European Commission's annual enlargement report, calling its findings on the judiciary and Cyprus "prejudiced and unfair" while accusing the EU of defending Greece's "maximalist positions."
- The report mentioned Cyprus 52 times, calling on Turkey to "normalise" relations and criticizing Ankara for refusing to recognize the Republic of Cyprus while advocating a two-state solution contrary to United Nations Security Council resolutions.
- Brussels cited "harassment of Cypriot fishing vessels" and military upgrades at Lefkoniko and Bogazi; the commission also criticized Turkey's maritime delimitation agreement with Libya, which Ankara maintains is "null and void."
- Legal actions against elected officials raised concerns about Ankara's "adherence to core democratic principles," with the commission reporting the gap between Turkey's accession objectives and democratic backsliding has "widened further" since 2018.
- Despite broad criticism, the report acknowledged Turkey "did not carry out any unauthorised drilling activities" in the Mediterranean over the past year, while irregular migrant arrivals in Cyprus from Turkey "decreased by almost a third" compared to last year.
