Boring Machines Now Tunnelling Under Downtown Toronto for New Subway Line

The 15-stop line is expected to carry close to 400,000 riders a day and ease pressure on TTC Line 1, officials said.

  • On Thursday, Premier Doug Ford announced that tunneling has officially begun for the Ontario Line's downtown segment, marking the first subway tunnels dug under Toronto's downtown core in over 60 years.
  • This 15.6-kilometre transit project will eventually feature 15 stations and more than 40 transit connections across the GTA, with twin tunnels running six kilometres from Exhibition Station to just west of the Don River.
  • Federal funding of $4 billion supports the project, which Minister Evan Solomon says will carry close to 400,000 riders daily and provide access to nearly 230,000 residents.
  • Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay noted "the complexity of this job is tremendous," as crews navigate tunneling near an existing rail line that must remain operational while the Line opens in the "early 2030s."
  • With five years until the projected opening, experts hope lessons from the Eglinton Crosstown LRT will keep the project on track, while Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria confirmed work is already happening "right across the line.
