Chamoli Tunnel Incident: 16 Rescued, 3 Feared Trapped After Water, Debris Enter Under-Construction Site
Multiple agencies are working to evacuate the remaining workers after water and debris entered the tunnel, officials said.
- On Thursday, a major accident occurred at a Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited project site in Pipalkoti, Chamoli, when water and debris entered an under-construction tunnel, trapping more than 20 workers; 16 have been safely rescued so far.
- Hindustan Construction Company is constructing the tunnel at the project site. Officials reported that 18 to 19 workers were trapped after the breach, with operations actively underway to reach the three remaining individuals inside.
- Chamoli District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar is overseeing the rescue operation involving the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Army, and Indo-Tibetan Border Police. Rescued workers are receiving medical treatment at the District Hospital in Gopeshwar.
- Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami directed agencies to conduct relief and rescue operations on a war footing, stating, "Top priority is to rescue every person trapped." He remains in constant communication with senior officials for real-time updates.
- Vinod Kumar Suman, Secretary of the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, confirmed emergency operation centres are continuously monitoring the situation. Authorities remain focused on safely accessing the affected tunnel portion while details about the breach circumstances are awaited.
