Tuesday’s Tamworth meeting to pay tribute to late local trainer Stephen Meyer
The memorial will honor a respected hobby trainer remembered by Racing NSW and the Tamworth Jockey Club for his integrity and lifelong love of thoroughbreds.
On Friday, 71-year-old Tamworth hobby trainer Stephen Meyer died following a tragic incident at the Scone Cup. Meyer sustained fatal injuries after being kicked by a horse before the final race and could not be revived at Scone Hospital.
A retired optical dispenser, Meyer obtained his owner-trainer licence in 2006 and gained prominence with his stable star, Danza In The Dark, which secured a breakthrough victory during the 2024 Walcha Cup.
Racing NSW paid tribute to Meyer as "a dedicated and highly regarded horseman," while the Tamworth Jockey Club stated that "Steve was a gentleman and friend to everyone at the Tamworth Jockey Club."
Trainer Holly Williams described Meyer as "just the loveliest man," while trainer Mel Dennett recalled his generosity, noting he "was so generous and caring and had a heart of gold."
His passing has devastated the racing community, with colleagues sharing they will "miss his stories" and "miss those warm hugs on cold winter mornings." The loss reflects the deep personal impact he had on those who worked alongside him.
