Talks Between TTC and CUPE Local 2 Continue Past Deadline
Around 700 TTC electrical workers and technicians could walk off the job as wages remain the main sticking point in talks, officials said.
The Toronto Transit Commission and CUPE Local 2 agreed early Saturday to extend negotiations until 6 p.m. today, delaying a potential lockout or strike involving roughly 700 electrical workers and technicians.
Contract talks stalled after the agreement expired in March, with workers voting 99 per cent in favor of strike action while the union seeks higher pay to handle cost of living increases.
TTC CEO Mandeep Lali argued union demands would increase costs by approximately $86,000 per employee over three years, while CUPE Local 2 President Sumit Galeria insists competitive wages are critical for a "safe, reliable system."
Mayor Olivia Chow and Premier Doug Ford have urged both sides to reach a deal, particularly with FIFA World Cup matches set to begin in Toronto in less than 30 days.
A work stoppage would not shut down the TTC entirely, but it could impact subway maintenance and signal repairs, potentially resulting in increasing delays and line closures across the transit network.
