Trump says Rogers 'completely obliterated' El-Sayed in debate
Trump praised Mike Rogers and called Abdul El-Sayed a jihadist after the debate, as a fact-check found no evidence of personal Muslim Brotherhood ties.
- On Friday morning, President Donald Trump escalated his attacks on Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, calling him a "Jihadist lunatic" on social media while declaring Republican Mike Rogers the winner of Thursday's Michigan Senate debate.
- During Thursday's debate, Republican Mike Rogers repeatedly suggested El-Sayed's family had ties to terrorist organizations, citing his mother's past employment at the Islamic American Relief Agency, though federal records show she was never charged with any crime.
- El-Sayed dismissed Rogers as "a sock puppet for the Trump administration" and challenged him to "go ahead and say it," while moderator Rick Albin noted the intense personal barbs continued off-camera during commercial breaks.
- Haris Tarin, vice-president of the Muslim Public Affairs Council , said Trump's comments made him feel "sick," noting the organization tracked an eight-fold increase in anti-Muslim speech over the last year as candidates exploit voter fears.
- The competitive Michigan Senate race could determine which party controls Congress, yet policy adviser Gregg Nunziata warns the explicit use of Muslim identity as a political attack remains "extremely destructive and deeply alarming" for discourse.
