Russia's Dmitriev in Washington for first US contact since Trump's midterm setback
Trump said a deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war may be imminent after meeting Dmitriev, as negotiations have picked up in recent weeks.
On Thursday, First Lady Melania Trump hosted Russian and Ukrainian officials at the White House to recognize the six-day ceasefire she brokered in the besieged Ukrainian village of Oleshky.
The localized truce, effective from October 27 to November 1, provided critical relief to Oleshky, a city of about 24,000 residents that faced severe shortages of food and medical supplies.
Nearly 800 residents evacuated during the window, while Russian President Vladimir Putin's envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, thanked Melania Trump for her "distinguished humanitarian role" in securing the truce.
Davyd Arakhamia, head of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's parliamentary faction, told Melania Trump she did an "amazing job" and urged her to pursue further humanitarian missions to de-escalate the conflict.
President Donald Trump met with the Russian envoy on Thursday, later suggesting "its going to be a big agreement" that "its going to involve more than Ukraine" and could include all of Europe.
Representatives of Ukraine and Russia met with the First Lady in the White House, but the US President meets only one side, after which he comments on a possible agreement.
