Trump, Rubio say talks with Tehran ongoing despite Iranian media claims otherwise
Rubio said Tehran has agreed to discuss parts of its nuclear program as lawmakers pressed the administration for a plan to end the war.
On Tuesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the U.S. is in talks with Iran and Tehran agreed to negotiate nuclear program components it previously refused to discuss.
Contrasting with President Donald Trump's comments on Monday, when he told CNBC he did not care if Iran talks were over, Rubio defended the military campaign that began Feb. 28.
Detailing Iran's military posture, Rubio described a "conventional shield" of missiles and drones; Operation Epic Fury reduced production, though he acknowledged Tehran "still a lot of drones."
Senator Jeanne Shaheen criticized the administration's war powers notification as "not consultation" but "an attempt to avoid answering" to Congress, noting constituents prioritize economic relief over regime change.
Rubio is scheduled to testify before multiple House and Senate panels this week on Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba as lawmakers press the administration to clarify its broader foreign policy strategy.
