Trump pushes an end to medical care for transgender youth nationally: Report
Proposed rules would bar Medicaid and CHIP from funding gender-affirming care for minors and cut Medicare and Medicaid funding to hospitals offering such care nationwide.
- The Department of Health and Human Services drafted rules to restrict Medicaid and CHIP funding for transgender youth, with full texts expected in early November, NPR reported Thursday.
- President Trump earlier issued an executive order declaring the U.S. "will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support the so-called 'transition' of a child", while HHS has criticized medical research and excluded the Utah analysis and American Academy of Pediatrics guidance.
- Research shows roughly 724,000 trans youth between ages 13 and 17 in the U.S., with studies indicating gender-affirming care improves well-being and reduces depression and self-harm.
- Hospitals would be forced to end gender-affirming care programs if federal funding is withheld, and if implemented, the rules could force more hospitals to close, leaving patients with Medicaid or private insurance without access, Protect Our Care said.
