Trump says Iran likely responsible for attack that shut vital Saudi oil pipeline
Saudi Arabia shut the Medina pipeline after drone strikes damaged pump stations, threatening about 5% of global oil supply, officials said.
- On Saturday, President Donald Trump said Iran was "probably" behind the drone attack on a critical Saudi Arabia oil pipeline. The 745-mile East-West Pipeline was temporarily closed on Friday following the strike, which caused damage and injuries.
- The 745-mile infrastructure had been handling up to 5% of the world's oil supply, helping avoid logjams in the Hormuz Strait. Saudi Arabia rerouted about 5 million barrels of oil per day following the closure.
- While drones originated in Iraq, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq denied responsibility for the attack. The Saudi foreign ministry reported the pipeline "was subjected to multiple attacks" on Thursday, resulting in injuries and damage.
- Trump spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed, who reportedly urged him to strike the Houthis as the Iran-backed group advances. Trump declined to take military action against the group during the call.
- Amid the ongoing US-Iran war, Trump touted the United States' naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, noting they take out 25 boats a day. He promised oil prices "would come tumbling down" when the war ends.
