Clergy Protest Proposed Alexandria Immigration Center
Operators say the 528-bed center will hold families and unaccompanied minors for stays averaging under 48 hours.
- A new 528-bed facility in Alexandria, Louisiana, may soon begin receiving undocumented families, unaccompanied minors, and single adult females at the Alexandria Family Staging Center, located at England Airpark under a draft agreement between ICE and the EEIDD.
- Anovaeon CEO Eric Fritz described the site as a "staging center for families who are voluntarily departing," saying it will house individuals for an average stay of under 48 hours and provide medical care, mental health care, and "quality meals."
- While Anovaeon Senior Director of Operations Jeffrey Lynch acknowledged operators must alert ICE if people attempt to leave, an ICE spokesperson officially defined the site as a "staging facility for deportations" in a secure detention environment.
- On Wednesday, immigrant rights groups denounced the facility, raising concerns about potential PFAS contamination, as Southeast Regional Attorney for the National Immigration Project Stephanie Alvarez-Jones stated, "There can be no hiding what this is, this is a detention center."
- Robert Hagen, project manager for LaSalle Family Foundation, reported last week the facility is 95% completed, and EEIDD officials indicated it could start receiving people within the next week or two, though DHS provided no official opening date.
