Trump could declare national economic emergency to justify universal tariffs, CNN reports
President-Elect Donald Trump is considering declaring a national economic emergency to justify universal tariffs, according to four sources familiar with the matter who told CNN.
The declaration would allow Trump to construct a new tariff program using the International Economic Emergency Powers Act, which authorizes a president to manage imports during a national emergency.
Kelly Ann Shaw stated, 'I think the president has broad authority to impose tariffs for a variety of reasons, and there are a number of statutory bases to do so.'
The Trump team believes rebuilding industrial capacity is important for economic and national security, benefiting communities and American workers.
