Trump calls for military to accelerate use of AI while protecting Americans
Trump said the government could take a financial stake in leading AI firms as the White House weighs a partnership with the industry.
President Donald Trump plans to host leaders of major AI companies at the White House next week to discuss the government taking a financial stake, aiming to "create almost a partnership with the American public."
Senator Bernie Sanders recently proposed a sovereign wealth fund requiring the U.S. to take a 50% stake in AI companies, a plan Trump noted aligns with his economic views where "economics are concerned, we have things that aren't that far apart."
Major U.S. AI firms including Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, SpaceX, and Anthropic are expected to attend, with SpaceX and Anthropic preparing for public offerings in the coming weeks; representatives could not be reached for immediate comment.
On Thursday, Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark told BBC's Newsnight the company maintains "in daily conversations with the US government and we're finding ways to be helpful to national security," while the firm recently praised the administration's Executive Order on AI.
The planned White House meeting signals easing tensions, although Anthropic currently faces a Department of Defense lawsuit over contract terms, reflecting a cooperative shift in the administration's approach to state investment in artificial intelligence.
