US to introduce label for all American-made seafood
The voluntary label is meant to help shoppers identify American-caught fish as imported seafood accounted for 80% of U.S. consumption in 2023, NOAA said.
On Friday, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a voluntary "U.S. Caught Seafood" label at a rally in Fort Myers, Florida, alongside President Donald Trump.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data shows 80 percent of seafood consumed in the United States was imported in 2023, while domestic fishermen caught $5.1 billion worth compared to $25 billion in imports.
The New England Fishermen's Stewardship Association termed the label a "major win" for Americans, while the Trump administration launched Seafood.gov to assist fishermen and consumers.
According to the White House, the Food and Drug Administration proposed the label as voluntary rather than mandatory, designed to inform consumer choices about seafood origin.
Officials suggest the administration is preparing $5 billion in loans through the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help the fishing industry purchase equipment as part of broader infrastructure rebuilding.
