Trump administration flouted court order on FEMA grant funding, US judge rules
Judge William Smith ruled the Trump administration unlawfully imposed immigration enforcement conditions on FEMA grants, affecting 20 Democratic-led states and violating federal law.
- On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge William Smith in Providence ruled the Trump administration violated his September 24 order by imposing similar immigration conditions on FEMA grants.
- The department had originally imposed conditions that 20 Democratic-led states and the District of Columbia said were designed to coerce them, while the President Donald Trump administration argued it was preserving enforcement ability.
- By inserting a conditional clause the administration sought to preserve enforcement, but U.S. District Judge William Smith said the `fig leaf conditional nature of the requirement makes little difference`.
- The court blocked enforcement and ordered the administration to remove new conditions from grant award documents by next week, ruling by U.S. District Judge William Smith blocked the measure.
- The case is one of many suits by Democratic attorneys general in New England that seek rulings blocking the administration’s immigration-related grant conditions in Rhode Island and other states.
