Trump Administration Faces Second Lawsuit to Block ICE Agents at Polls
The coalition says the policy would intimidate voters and violate federal election law, including a ban on armed men at polling sites.
- On Friday, a coalition of civil rights groups and unions sued the Trump administration in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to block U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from polling locations during November's midterm elections.
- The lawsuit follows comments from Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin earlier this month suggesting agents could conduct enforcement at polls; FBI Director Kash Patel did not rule out sending FBI agents, stating they would "follow the law."
- Citing the Voting Rights Act, plaintiffs argue the policy violates federal law prohibiting "armed men" at election sites. Under federal law, "troops" are allowed at polling locations only if "such force be necessary to repel armed enemies."
- Kristen Clarke, the NAACP's general counsel, called the deployment a "blatant attempt" to obstruct elections, asserting the administration converts polling sites into "militarized zones," disenfranchising Black, Latino, and Asian voters.
- Nine organizations, including the Service Employees International Union and the National Urban League, joined the suit. The Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice did not immediately respond to comment requests Friday.
