Some trucks are still driving across the Merwede Bridge near Gorinchem on Sunday, despite the ban imposed by Rijkswaterstaat as a precaution. Drivers risk a fine as a result, a police spokeswoman said when asked. "We are not continuously present there, but if we see violations, we will take action." The police and Rijkswaterstaat are urging freight traffic to abide by the ban.
Rijkswaterstaat expects that the ban on truck traffic in front of the Merwedebrug can be enforced within two weeks. This depends on the cameras that need to be installed. After that, Rijkswaterstaat can deploy road inspectors with special enforcement officer status to analyze the footage and actually issue the fines. The fine amounts to 500 euros.
