La Lanterna or El Pedocin beach in Trieste, northern Italy, is said to be Europe’s last gender-segregated beach. Yet far from being an unwelcome hangover from another time, for the Triestini this is a precious space for women to be themselves.
Once inside the beach, men and women can only go back to mixing beyond the seabreaker. Those coming from outside may be strange, but the locals guarantee that it is a place "free of prejudices" where "they do not need to be disturbed by the male look": "We know that if our bathing suit is not perfect, if the hair is not perfect, if we have not done the wax in perfection, no one will say anything because we are among women"
