Tributes pour in after delivery driver fatally stabbed
A fundraiser has raised more than $170,000 as officials vow stronger protections for gig economy workers after the fatal attack.
On Friday night, Hungry Panda delivery driver Jianming Feng was fatally stabbed in Melbourne's CBD while confronting a man tampering with bicycles. A 51-year-old Footscray man was arrested in connection with the incident, which also injured a 34-year-old colleague.
Feng moved to Australia from Shaanxi Province, China, around 2017 to support his wife and two children who remain in China. Colleagues remembered the father as diligent and generous, with earnings rarely spent on himself.
Raising more than $170,000 in less than 24 hours, the Melbourne Chinatown Business Association launched a fundraiser for Feng's family. MCBA president Christina Zhao said the community's strength is shown "by how we stand together during tragedy."
Hundreds attended a Saturday vigil at the State Library, which evolved into a protest over CBD safety. International student Xi Ip voiced community concerns, stating, "We were expecting a safer community. We don't want anything like this to ever happen again."
Victorian Premier Ben Carroll vowed to make "whatever changes are necessary" following the fatal stabbing. On Sunday, Carroll told reporters he would work with the Transport Workers Union to ensure protection for "vulnerable Victorians" in the gig economy.
