Alex Ligertwood, Former Santana Vocalist, Dies at 79
Brian Auger and The Magic of Santana said Ligertwood was one of the best singers on the planet and praised his range and long career.
Alex Ligertwood, the Scottish vocalist best known for his tenure with Santana, died at age 79 at his Santa Monica home on Saturday. His wife and agent, Shawn Brogan, announced he passed peacefully in his sleep.
Ligertwood served as lead vocalist for Santana on five separate occasions between 1979 and 1994, contributing vocals to hits including "Winning," "Hold On," and "All I Ever Wanted." His powerful voice defined a generation of Latin rock.
Beyond Santana, Ligertwood collaborated with jazz-rock keyboardist Brian Auger in Oblivion Express and guitar legend Jeff Beck in the Jeff Beck Group. He also recorded with the Grateful Dead spinoff project Go Ahead and French jazz group Troc.
Colleagues mourned Ligertwood immediately. Brian Auger, who played with Rod Stewart and Jimi Hendrix, wrote that Ligertwood was "simply the best singer to ever do it," while Brogan said his "favorite thing in life was to make music."
Active until the end, Ligertwood performed his final show just two weeks ago. Since 2011, he served as the voice of The Magic of Santana, the tribute band that mourned his passing on social media.
On Monday, May 4, Sheila shared sad news on her Instagram account. The singer paid tribute to her friend Alex Ligertwood, with whom she had collaborated on the album Venue elsewhere, released in 2021.
