Trial for man accused in Pearson gold heist hears more from key figure in case
Arsalan Chaudhary said he told Parmpal Sidhu the truck and driver were ready as prosecutors allege a doctored waybill enabled the theft.
On Monday, Arsalan Chaudhary testified in Parmpal Sidhu's trial in Brampton, Ont., that he told Sidhu the truck and driver were ready on the day of the 2023 gold heist, to which Sidhu replied, "OK."
Prosecutors allege Sidhu, an Air Canada employee at the time, facilitated the theft of 6,600 gold bars weighing more than 400 kilograms from Pearson International Airport by providing a doctored waybill for the shipment arriving from Switzerland.
After pleading guilty, Chaudhary was sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to pay $22 million in restitution; he previously testified he took 30 per cent of the gold bars.
Sidhu has pleaded not guilty to charges of theft over $5,000 and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence in the 2023 heist; the trial continues in Brampton, Ont.
Chaudhary testified he melted some gold before traveling to Pakistan, where he was kidnapped and abused until surrendering the loot; his testimony was paused last week due to trauma.
