Treasury Board Minister Says He’s Unaware of Pests in Federal Office Buildings
Ali said he will have his team review reports of mice, rats, bats and bedbugs after disclosures showed dozens of buildings affected since 2020.
On Thursday, Treasury Board President Shafqat Ali stated he was unaware of pest reports in federal buildings, despite order paper responses revealing infestations across dozens of government facilities.
Order paper responses revealed that dozens of federal buildings have reported pests including mice, rats, bats, and bedbugs since 2020, marking a persistent issue across government facilities.
While Public Services and Procurement Canada manages these office buildings, public servants and federal unions have raised concerns about persistent pest issues for years, creating workplace safety tensions.
During a press conference Thursday, Ali discussed newly tabled legislation to reduce red tape by amending 31 laws across 11 federal departments and agencies, citing at least $264 million in estimated savings.
The Treasury Board President pledged to investigate the reported infestations, telling reporters, "If it's heath and safety, I take it very seriously and I will be asking my team to look into that.
