Travellers to Spain, France and Italy warned to prepare for 2026 ETIAS border changes

UK travellers must pay a 20 Euro fee for ETIAS and register biometric data under the Entry/Exit System valid for three years to enhance EU border security.

  • From later this year, UK passport holders must apply online for ETIAS, submitting personal and trip details and paying a €20 fee, to travel in the Schengen area.
  • From October 2025, the EU's biometric registration under the EES requires UK passport holders to provide fingerprints and a facial photo, creating digital records valid for three years.
  • Passengers departing via Port of Dover, Eurotunnel or St Pancras International will complete checks before leaving the UK using kiosks or registration areas, while cruise passengers with sailings outside Schengen are generally exempt; frequent travellers must observe the 90 days in any 180 day limit.
  • Travelers should allow extra time at airports, ferry ports and rail terminals, especially during busy seasons, as ETIAS and EES rollout could cause delays, official guidance says.
  • The EU says automating border control through ETIAS and EES is intended to strengthen security and curb illegal migration across the Schengen area, with a digital EES record valid for three years allowing biometric reuse on future trips.
