Traveling soon? Here are the new items TSA banned from checked bags
The TSA now bans gas cartridge cordless hair tools and refills from checked baggage to reduce air travel safety risks, with one device allowed per traveler and safety covers required.
- On August 20, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration expanded its list of banned items in checked luggage, including certain cordless hair tools.
- The update addresses fire risks by restricting cordless hair styling devices such as curling irons, flat irons, and straighteners that contain lithium-ion or lithium metal batteries, or use butane fuel, to carry-on luggage only, since a fire in checked baggage cannot be promptly managed.
- TSA permits cordless hair styling tools in carry-on luggage only if they are equipped with a secure cover that stops accidental activation, while spare gas cartridges are completely prohibited.
- According to Florida TSA spokesperson Daniel Velez, "That's why they're only allowed in carry-on bags" since fires in checked bags pose greater risks due to lack of immediate response.
- These stricter rules aim to reduce incidents, as between 2006 and 2025, lithium batteries caused 644 events of smoke, fire, or extreme heat on planes, supporting TSA's multilayered screening approach.
