Trans Mountain poised for expansions as pipeline fills up
The pipeline averaged 87% utilization in Q3, reaching 90%+ since then, with expansions expected to add up to 360,000 barrels per day over five years.
- In its third-quarter financial report Thursday, Trans Mountain Corp. said the pipeline averaged 87 per cent utilization with record throughput of 777,000 barrels per day, and CEO Mark Maki said in an interview Friday, `Seasonally, to be around 90 to 95 per cent full is not a bad place to be. But that is indicating things are getting a little snug.`
- With total capacity at 890,000 barrels a day, Mark Maki said he expects volumes to dip in the second and third quarters of next year, as oilsands plants undergo seasonal maintenance.
- Planned upgrades include adding chemical agents to boost capacity by 10 per cent late next year or early in 2027, followed by pump stations and 30 kilometres of new pipe starting mid-2027.
- The company earned $127 million for the quarter ended Sept. 30 and revenue rose to $765 million from $666 million, expecting $1.7 billion to the Canadian government this year, up from $1.25 billion.
- Separately, Enbridge Inc., Canada's biggest crude shipper, recently announced US$1.4 billion in capacity expansions, while 60 per cent of seaborne cargoes go to Asian markets, mainly China.
