Days of disruption ahead after mudslide derails train
The derailment caused minor injuries to four people and halted services between Penrith North Lakes and Oxenholme Lake District, with 87 passengers onboard.
- On Monday , an Avanti West Coast 4.28am service from Glasgow to London Euston derailed near Shap village, carrying 87 people including 10 staff members.
 - Network Rail's Sam MacDougall said early indications pointed to a landslide after the front coach of the 11‑carriage service derailed at about 6.15am during severe weather and darkness.
 - Emergency crews evacuated passengers to a reception centre, with medical checks under way; only four people suffered minor injuries and no-one required hospital treatment.
 - Passengers are advised not to travel north of Preston while recovery work continues, with Avanti West Coast warning of delays up to 120 minutes and tickets valid Wednesday to Friday.
 - Crews have worked through the night to remove the train and begin repairs, but all lines between Penrith North Lakes and Oxenholme Lake District remain blocked, with Network Rail saying `Our team at Shap have been working through the night in wet and windy weather`.
