Toyota, Honda form new Canadian lobby group as industry faces challenges
The new association will speak for 75% of Canadian vehicle production and push tariff relief, supply-chain stability and EV policy changes.
- On Wednesday, Honda and Toyota launched the Pacific Manufacturing Association of Canada to represent their distinct manufacturing interests as Canada's two largest automotive producers.
- Together, these Japanese carmakers produced more than 75 per cent of all vehicles in Canada last year, employing more than 60 per cent of assembly plant workers after the Detroit Three scaled back operations.
- Brendan Sweeney, a former research leader at McMaster University and Western University, will serve as PMAC's inaugural president, with Honda Canada Inc. chief Dave Jamieson as chair.
- PMAC will prioritize trade, tariff remissions, and CUSMA negotiations; Sweeney emphasized collaboration with the Trump administration is essential to maintain a competitive automotive industry.
