Tory MP says 4,000 letters sent urging Carney to amend Indian Act status rules
More than 4,000 people have urged immediate changes to First Nations status rules, while Senate amendments would extend eligibility to about 3,500 people.
Conservative MP Billy Morin wrote to Prime Minister Mark Carney this week, urging the government to stop delaying and pass Bill S-2 with Senate amendments addressing Indian Act status rules.
The legislation aims to resolve the "second-generation cutoff," a 1985 Indian Act provision preventing status transfer for individuals with specific ancestry that critics describe as discriminatory.
More than 4,000 letters reached the House committee studying the bill, while over 500 First Nations support the Senate amendments that would allow eligibility for approximately 3,500 people.
Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty opposes the Senate's changes and opted to continue consultations with First Nations, while reports indicate Parliamentary Secretary Jaime Battiste warned colleagues about damaging government relations.
Morin warned against "tokenizing" Indigenous Liberal MPs, stating that reconciliation requires hearing diverse voices and that the government now has a "clear choice" to address these status inequities.
