Top lawyer for military joint chiefs stepping down early, citing ‘personal reasons’
Widmar said he is retiring for personal reasons after more than 28 years in uniform, as Pentagon leadership turnover continues to reshape top military ranks.
Gen. Eric Widmar, senior legal counsel to Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Dan Caine, announced his resignation, concluding more than 28 years of military service.
Widmar's exit follows a string of departures over the past 18 months, including Gen. Chris Donahue and Gen. Randy George, as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reshapes Pentagon leadership.
Widmar told ProPublica he is leaving "for personal reasons," noting the role required living apart from his family for two years while he led over 150 legal professionals.
Caine praised Widmar's "remarkable" service, while Kori Schake of the American Enterprise Institute warned the exodus creates a command climate where officials hesitate to take initiative.
Critics of Hegseth's aggressive restructuring note it occurred alongside controversial actions, including a strike in Iran that killed nearly 200 people, prompting scrutiny over target intelligence.
