Illinois State's early offense produced a 21-0 cushion by the second quarter after grabbing a 14-0 lead in the final five minutes of the first quarter and Rittenhouse's 19-yard touchdown pass to Javon Charles.
Rittenhouse completed 28 of 37 passes for 228 yards, and Northern Iowa's Jaxon Dailey went 15-for-23 for 142 yards with two interceptions, while Victor Dawson carried 17 times for 101 yards.
Illinois State improved to 6-3 and 3-2 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, while Northern Iowa dropped to two, 0-5 in conference play.
Despite a late surge, the Panthers' rally fell short after JC Roque Jr. threw a 41-yard scoring strike to Jaxon Dailey and Matt Maldonado capped the scoring with a 32-yard field goal.
