Tofino icons carve out accolades at National Surf Championships
Dempfle-Olin won the Open Women’s title by 1.47 points, and Devries claimed his 12th Open Men’s crown.
Sanoa Passion Dempfle-Olin and Pete Devries claimed victories at the Canadian Surf Championships in Tofino from May 8 to 10, with Dempfle-Olin winning the Open Women's Division and Devries securing his 12th Open Men title.
Achieving a personal goal in his 40s, the 41-year-old Devries recaptured the title, while Canada's first Olympic surfer, Dempfle-Olin, bested her sister Mathea Dempfle-Olin in the final.
Rising stars Shea Bruhwiler and Ocea Green defended their U-18 crowns, with Bruhwiler scoring 15.16 in the U-18 Boys final and Green achieving 16.20 in the U-18 Girls heat.
Devries praised the Canadian Surfing Association for the event's organization, remarking, "The level hasn't been higher than this," regarding the improved global competition.
Young competitors like 17-year-old Bruhwiler are preparing for the Men's division as they age out of junior categories, aiming to build on current performance for future open competition.
