Timbers Star Diego Chara to Retire After 2027 MLS Sprint Season
Diego Chara will play one more MLS sprint season and retire after 16 seasons with Portland, where he has appeared in 450 league matches.
On Monday, Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Chara announced his retirement after the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, ending his career with the club he joined in 2011 as their first Designated Player.
Chara is the team's all-time leader in games played with 450 and minutes played with 37k+, while holding the league record for most career yellows with 130.
Timbers coach Martí Cifuentes praised Chara's professionalism, noting "Loyalty in football is not easy to achieve," while Chara credited teammates and club support for the strength to continue playing.
The MLS Sprint Season runs from February to May 2027 with 30 teams playing 14 games each, as the league transitions to a calendar aligning with international counterparts.
Despite Portland's 10-14-7 record and 11th-place standing in the Western Conference, Chara's 16-season tenure includes the 2015 MLS championship and three Western Conference titles in 2015, 2018 and 2021.
