Report: Tigers Ace Tarik Skubal Already Playing Catch
Jon Heyman said Skubal is already playing catch after elbow surgery, and a return within six weeks would beat the usual two-to-three-month recovery.
Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal began a throwing program on Friday, just nine days after undergoing elbow surgery on May 6. The procedure utilized a specialized NanoNeedle Scope 2.0 to remove a loose body.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch reported Skubal feels no discomfort while throwing, calling his mental and physical freedom a "great sign." Agent Scott Boras referred to the minimally invasive procedure as a "Skubal scope."
While similar injuries typically sideline pitchers for two or three months, MLB insider Jon Heyman revealed Skubal could astonishingly return to the mound within six weeks. This accelerated timeline avoids the intensive buildup usually required after surgery.
The Tigers are "unlikely" to trade the star this summer despite struggling 4-9 since Skubal last pitched. ESPN sources noted Detroit's odds of signing the pitcher to a short-term deal with opt-out clauses became "much higher" following the injury.
Detroit remains 2.5 games out of a potential wild card spot in the 2026 campaign. Skubal, a dominant force with 84 starts since 2023, will be itching to return and help secure a serious playoff push.
The Detroit Tigers opening star, Tarik Skubal, began to play throwing and receiving the ball, in addition to making soft pitches, just over a week after elbow surgery.
