16 Killed In Powerful Earthquake In Tibet
Rescue teams are searching damaged settlements after the quake collapsed at least 339 homes and disrupted roads and communications, Chinese authorities said.
A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Baqen County in northern Tibet on Thursday night, killing at least 16 people and injuring 32, including 11 in serious condition.
Situated within the seismically active Himalayan-Tibetan region north of Lhasa, the area is highly vulnerable to powerful tremors. The China Earthquake Networks Centre reported the quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.
Authorities report at least 339 homes collapsed, while rockfalls forced restrictions on National Highway 317 and railway authorities suspended services. More than 1,600 personnel have been mobilized for relief operations.
The China Earthquake Administration activated a level-II emergency response as rescue teams scrambled to reach affected communities. Communication disruptions and forecast snowfall complicate ongoing search operations.
Several aftershocks followed the main earthquake, raising concerns about additional damage to already weakened structures. Authorities continue assessing casualties and property losses as search operations proceed in remote settlements.
The earthquake affected an area more than 4,500 metres above sea level and with very low population density. The army was mobilized to find the survivors.
