100-year-old veteran did not want to miss Battle of the Atlantic memorial ceremony

A rainy day couldn't stop 100-year-old Winnie Rice from attending a memorial service for veterans. Rice was among about 100 attendees who gathered in Saint John on Sunday morning to commemorate the sailors, merchant mariners and aviators who died in the Battle of the Atlantic.

The members of HMCS Montcalm were gathered on Sunday in memory of those who fought 80 years ago in the Battle of the Atlantic.

This week will mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest campaign of World War II. Ceremonies were held throughout the province today, including one in St. John’s at the National War Memorial. NTV’s Marykate O’Neill reports.

The roughly 30-minute ceremony involved the marching of the guard and the sea cadet band, alongside the local naval, sea and air cadets.
