3 Officers Wounded, Suspect Dead in Philadelphia Shooting
Authorities say the officers are in stable condition after the shooting, and police recovered a weapon as investigators work to determine what led up to it.
Three Philadelphia police officers were shot late Saturday night in the Wynnefield neighborhood near 54th and Arlington streets; the suspect was pronounced dead at Jefferson Hospital.
Officers responded around 10:30 p.m. Saturday to a reported shooting when they encountered a suspect who Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said refused to "stand down" and continued engaging them.
Three officers, including a sergeant, remain in stable condition at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center with wounds to the face, hip, and leg; four officers returned fire during the encounter.
Authorities identified the deceased suspect as a 57-year-old man, and a weapon was recovered at the scene; no other civilians or bystanders were injured during the confrontation.
Philadelphia Police Department investigators are still determining the circumstances surrounding the original shooting and the subsequent shootout; names of the officers and suspect remain unreleased.
