Thousands Report Bluesky Outage as Investigation Continues
Bluesky said some systems were down as 2,700 users reported outages on Downdetector before reports fell to about 450, the company said.
On Thursday, April 16, 2026, social media platform Bluesky experienced significant service interruptions, which COO Rose Wang attributed to a denial-of-service attack.
Service disruptions began around 2:42 a.m. ET on Thursday, with Bluesky's status page reporting it was "investigating an incident" involving two servers.
Downdetector reports peaked at around 2,700 earlier, and while figures have since dropped to around 450, the outage persisted for more than 7 hours.
The Bluesky Team reported "some systems down," later noting, "We are starting to see some early recovery," though many users faced loading errors.
Bluesky launched as a decentralized alternative to X after Elon Musk purchased Twitter in 2022, attracting users who object to Musk's changes.
